Mass General Brigham (formerly Partners HealthCare) is a not-for-profit, integrated health care system founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital – teaching affiliates of Harvard Medical School as well as two of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. Mass General Brigham also includes community and specialty hospitals, a physician network, community health centers, home health, and other health care entities, and is committed to patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community, both in our region and across the globe.

A global community

At Mass General Brigham, we define our community well beyond our borders. Caring for the global community has been a part of the mission of our founding hospitals for 200 years. Mass General Brigham hospitals provide treatment for patients from all over the world, and they support programs and centers that provide care for underserved international populations. Our work is making inroads in dealing with some of the most challenging health issues facing the world today.

A history of trailblazing

From the first anesthetic in 1846, to leveraging artificial intelligence today, our system continues to be on the cutting edge of progressing health care around the world.

1821

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) admitted its first patient on September 3, 1821. In its first year of operation, MGH became the first teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

1832

Brigham and Women’s Hospital, formerly The Boston Lying-in Hospital, opens its doors as one of the first maternity hospitals for women unable to afford in-home medical care.

1962

MGH led the first successful limb replantation, restoring a child’s arm that had been severed in an accident.

1994

Mass General Brigham founded by MGH and the Brigham.

2010

Mass General Brigham became one of the first health care networks to have 100% of its primary care and specialty physicians in ambulatory care on an electronic health record.

2011

The Brigham performed the first full face transplant in the United States, the first of three completed that year. Additionally, the Brigham performed its first bilateral hand transplant in 2011.

2013

Mass General Brigham becomes one of the first health care systems in the nation to offer whole genome sequencing, analysis, and interpretation to patients, bridging genetic research and clinical care.

2018

Mass General Brigham partners with the National Institutes of Health and other health systems for the All of Us research program, a national precision medicine initiative to gather health data from 1 million participants to accelerate health research and medical breakthroughs.
